Toronto residents looking to ski or snowboard close to home can return to Earl Bales Ski and Snowboard Centre in North York on Wednesday, Jan. 7, when the facility reopens for the winter season.

The season is scheduled to continue through Sunday, March 22, depending on weather and slope conditions, according to a City of Toronto news release issued Jan. 6. Lift tickets range from $21.29 to $40.65.

The opening will be partial. The main and beginner hills will be available Wednesday, while the south and race hills will remain closed as crews continue making snow.

The city has not provided an opening date for those two hills. Visitors are encouraged to check the centre’s webpage before heading out, as weather and snowfall affect daily operations.

Lessons begin later this month

Skiing and snowboarding lessons are scheduled to begin Wednesday, Jan. 21, two weeks after the slopes reopen.

The centre offers programming for all ages, with instruction ranging from beginner lessons to more advanced training. Its facilities include beginner hills as well as full runs for people with more experience.

Helmets are mandatory for everyone registered in lessons. The city also recommends that all other visitors wear helmets, regardless of age.

Information about operating hours, lift tickets, passes and rental equipment is available on the Earl Bales webpage. The city recommends checking that information in advance rather than assuming the hills will be operating on a particular day.

Other winter recreation options

The North York facility is near public transit, giving residents and visitors an option for skiing and snowboarding within Toronto.

While skiing and snowboarding at Earl Bales require participation fees, the city also offers free winter recreation programs and activities. Those options are listed on its Ice and Snow activities webpage.

Residents interested in other seasonal programming can also check the city’s regular winter recreation offerings. Some registration spaces remain available, the city said.
