Pickering families looking for a free PA Day activity can head to the Durham York Energy Centre in Courtice on October 26 to learn about what happens to household waste after collection.

The drop-in event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1835 Energy Drive, according to a Region of Durham announcement. No advance registration is needed, and all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Guided tours will take visitors to the facility’s control room, where they can see the waste pit and the claw used at the centre. Families will also have opportunities to explore informational displays and ask the team questions.

Other activities include button making, photo opportunities, stickers and temporary tattoos. The location has accessible parking and facility access.

Learning about waste as a resource

The region says the event is intended to help residents understand how household waste is turned into resources, while encouraging the community to cut the amount of waste it creates.

Visitors can learn about the five parts of the region’s waste hierarchy: Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover. Those concepts form the educational focus of the event, alongside a look inside the facility.

The announcement describes the day as an opportunity to learn both about reducing waste and about managing the waste that is generated as a resource.

Planning a visit

Families can drop in during the five-hour event rather than registering beforehand. The activities take place at the energy centre in Courtice, not in Pickering.
