Subway riders in Toronto should plan for earlier-than-usual end-of-service trips next week, as the TTC shuts down a stretch of Line 1 overnight for four consecutive nights.

Subway service between York Mills and Eglinton stations will end nightly at 11 p.m. from Monday, Oct. 19 to Thursday, Oct. 22, according to a TTC service advisory. The early closures are needed for planned infrastructure work on the line.

Regular service will resume each morning at roughly 6 a.m., so the disruption will not affect the morning commute.

What replaces the subway

Shuttle buses will operate between the affected stations while the trains are off, and TTC staff will be on hand to help customers. Wheel-Trans service will be available on request for any rider who needs assistance.

Riders at Lawrence Station should note that the Ranleigh and Bedford Park entrances will be closed during the work. All subway stations on the affected stretch will remain open so customers can buy or load a PRESTO card or PRESTO ticket and connect to surface routes.

Why the closures are needed

The TTC does most of its subway maintenance at the end of service each night, but the agency says it still needs early nightly and weekend closures to complete state-of-good-repair work on the system.

How to check for disruptions

Anyone relying on elevators or escalators can call the TTC lift line at 416-539-5438 for real-time information on outages across the system.

The TTC is also encouraging riders to follow @ttcnotices on X, subscribe to MyTTC e-Services and check the Live Service Alerts page on ttc.ca before travelling during the closure period.

For passengers connecting from GO Transit, MiWay, York Region Transit or Durham Region services into the city, the closures mean the last Line 1 trains through the affected stations will pass through shortly before 11 p.m. each night, with shuttle buses adding travel time for late-evening trips.
