Taste of the Danforth returned to Toronto's east end this past weekend, drawing big crowds to Danforth Avenue for the first time since 2023.
The three-day festival ran from Aug. 7 to 9 along Danforth Avenue between Broadview and Jones avenues, filling the street with food, live entertainment, dancing and family activities, according to Beach Metro Community News, which covered the event.
Described as Canada's largest street festival, the event brought together more than 100 local restaurants and businesses, offering flavours from around the world. The neighbourhood's Greek heritage remained a central part of the celebration, while the weekend also highlighted the many cultures and communities that make up Toronto.
A long road back
The festival's return followed years of uncertainty. Taste of the Danforth was cancelled from 2020 through 2022, ran again in 2023, and was then cancelled in both 2024 and 2025 amid funding challenges.
This year's edition was made possible through funding from the City of Toronto and the Province of Ontario. Just days before the festival began, the federal government announced up to $100,000 in additional funding to support the event.
For a festival that anchors the summer for Greektown and the surrounding Riverside and Beach-area communities, the comeback marked the end of a two-year absence from a stretch of Danforth Avenue that normally welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each August.
Beach Metro Community News was on hand throughout the weekend to document the sights, sounds and food as the festival filled the street once again.
For residents across the Greater Toronto Area, the festival's return signals that one of the region's signature summer events is back on the calendar — and its organizers now have a year to build toward a 2027 edition with public funding back in place at all three levels of government.
